Piazzale Michelangelo

Yesterday some friends and I took a picnic up to one of the most picturesque spots - the Piazzale Michelangelo. It's about a 45 minute walk across the river. Once up there you can see the whole city! I made bruschetta and we also had cheese, grapes and juice boxes of wine (those exist here). Watching the sunset was one of the most amazing things I've done so far! There was a big group of us, which was alot of fun. The walk there was almost as beautiful as the view from the top. I was very happy with the bruschetta I made - expect a post on how to make it soon! I have two day trips coming up this weekend, so stay tuned for that too!

My heart beats for you

Some things you might not have known about Florence:

1. The name Firenze comes from Fiorenza, meaning flowering

2. Streets in Florence have two sets of numbers. Black is for residences and red is for businesses (very confusing at first)

3. As a result of an agreement between Mussolini and the Church during the time of Fascism, known as the Concordat, there is no separation between Church and State. Still to this day in Italy classrooms have crucifixes on the walls and religious teachers are still appointed by the Church

4. The bread here tastes terrible because it is made without salt. This is because in the Middle Ages the salt tax was so high that Tuscans started baking bread without it
